DIY Candy Bar Cards: A Sweet Way to Send a Message

Nothing feels as overwhelming as standing in the greeting card aisle at the drugstore, trying to find a card that perfectly sums up how you feel about your best friend or partner. Store-bought cards can be super convenient, but sometimes you want to get creative with your message.

That’s basically what candy bar cards were made for. These DIY gifts are perfect for quite a few occasions, including:

It’s unclear how long this quirky tradition has been around. What’s certain is that kids and adults alike can still get a huge kick out of constructing clever messages out of popular candy bars. Plus, it’s a super easy and affordable way to show someone love in a unique way!

Whether you’re looking for kid-friendly craft activities to keep the family busy or just want a good DIY gift for an upcoming occasion, here’s how to make your very own DIY candy bar cards.

What You’ll Need

  • Poster board, such as for school projects
  • Chocolate bars and/or boxes of candy (we’ll explore specific types later on, but make sure it’s candy with names you can actually use in your message)
  • Packing tape or double-sided tape
  • Markers
  • Any other decorations you want (paper cut-outs, stickers, paint, glitter, photos, construction paper, etc.)

How to Make Your DIY Candy Bar Card

How to make DIY candy bar cards

Step 1: Buy or gather candy.

Your very first step depends slightly on your situation. If you’re using leftover candy from Halloween, Easter, or a kids’ school Valentine’s Day party, your messages will be somewhat limited by the candy you have on hand.

Alternatively, if you will be buying candy specifically for the occasion, you can first draft your message with candies in mind, then buy what you need.

Candies that work well for DIY candy bar cards include:

  • SweeTarts
  • Laffy Taffy
  • Good & Plenty
  • PayDay
  • 100 Grand
  • Butterfinger
  • Snickers
  • Crunch
  • Hot Tamales
  • Airheads
  • Almond Joy
  • Extra Gum
  • Lifesavers
  • Reese’s Pieces
  • Take 5
  • Big Hunk
  • Now and Later
  • Nerds

But, really, you can use any candy as long as you can fit the name into a sentence!

Step 2: Write your message.

You may want to draft your message on a separate sheet of paper first to make sure you have a message you like that will fit well with your candy.

When you’re ready to write your message on the poster board, arrange the candies as you write so that they fill in the “blanks” of your sentences.

Step 3: Attach candy.

With your message written, you’ll need to fill in those blanks with candy! Use strong tape – like packing tape or strong double-sided tape – to attach the candy to the poster board.

Step 4: Decorate your candy bar card and voila!

You may want to add extra decorations to your card, like ribbon, stickers, paper cut-outs, photos, glitter, feathers, borders or anything else you can imagine.

You can also attach small gifts, like gift cards or trinkets.

But what should I write?

The short answer is anything you want, as long as you can fit candy names into your sentences! However, there are tons of adorable examples online of popular candy phrases, like “I wouldn’t trade you for 100 GRAND,” or “Our love is like a SYMPHONY.”

Gift Sweetly

There’s no gift like the gift of candy, whether you stick it to a poster board, put it on a wreath, or arrange it as a “bouquet.”
And if there’s someone in your life who just can’t get enough of candy, you can’t go wrong with a monthly candy subscription box delivering the gift of sweet straight to their door!
