Five Ways to Celebrate Pride Month

Summer brings a long list of great things to celebrate – and that list includes LGBTQ+ Pride. Of course, Pride can and should be celebrated all year long, but it gets a special spotlight in June. So as you zip up your summer plans, don’t forget to make room between the barbecues and vacations for Pride Month!

Whether you’re a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community or are looking to educate yourself and support friends or loved ones, we’re here to help you get inspired for this exciting month. Keep reading to learn some great ideas for celebrating Pride Month.

Celebrating Pride Month: Five Ways to Show Your Pride

1. Learn about LGBTQ+ history.

Do you know why Pride is celebrated in the month of June? What about some of the most important figures in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights, or the symbolism behind the colors on the rainbow flag? Pride Month is the perfect time to educate yourself about LGBTQ+ history and why the fight for gay and trans rights is still far from over.

Check out online resources, watch documentaries like Paris is Burning and The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson, tune into LGBTQ+ podcasts while tidying up the house, or attend educational Pride events in your area. You’ll learn about how the Stonewall Riots of 1969 cemented June as Pride month in the U.S., the different versions of the rainbow Pride flag and what they represent, and so much more.

2. Support LGBTQ+ causes.

While you’re getting educated, give back by supporting local, national and international organizations fighting for LGBTQ+ rights.

Whether you choose to donate money, volunteer your time at events or phone banks, or give a shout-out on social media, you can use this Pride Month to make a difference in the lives of members of the LGBTQ+ community. These organizations fight for fair legislation, better health care, equal housing, youth resources, and so much more. Read up on the organizations that most need your support!

3. Stream LGBTQ+ entertainment.

Celebrating Pride Month may include getting educated and giving back, but it’s also a lot of fun – especially with so much great LGBTQ+ media out there. Though it doesn’t solve the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, thankfully there’s more representation on screen than ever before. That means that after a hard day of activism, you can kick back, turn on the TV and get ready to laugh and cry with some silver screen icons.

From narratives like Special to reality shows like Queer Eye, competition shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race and Dragula to award-winning films like Moonlight and Portrait of a Lady On Fire, the list of content to stream this Pride Month goes on and on.

4. Express yourself!

Break out the rainbow colors! Whether or not you plan to attend Pride events, one of the most fun ways to join in on celebrating Pride Month is to express your Pride in your own unique style.

Wear colors that represent the themes of the Pride flag that mean the most to you. Hang a Pride flag on your home or car. Don a rainbow tote bag or deck out your go-to bag with Pride pins. Get a Pride-themed manicure and have your nails painted in rainbow colors. The possibilities are endless!
